BLAKE MATRAY - MUSHER
Blake Matray started mushing dogs
in North Dakota. During an assignment as a B-52 pilot for the
USAF at Minot AFB, Blake met Iditarod musher Brad Pozarnsky and
bought two puppies from him. They became his first leaders and
Blake eventually added more dogs to form a competitive distance
team. Blake’s first sled dog race was the 1997 Midnight
Run in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. In years that followed,
his team also participated in the UP 200 and Montana’s Race
to the Sky.
In 2000, Blake left the Air Force and joined the Alaska Air National
Guard at Eielson AFB near Fairbanks. He then moved his dog team
north to Two Rivers with the hopes of someday running in the Iditarod
Trail Sled Dog Race. During his qualification, Blake’s team
completed the Tustumena 200 in 2001 and in 2002, the Denali 300
where Blake received the Best Cared for Team Award. Finally, in
2003, Blake and his team got the chance to participate in the
Iditarod.
Blake maintains a kennel of 26 working Siberian Huskies. Their
lines are Anadyr, Northome and Skoro. Blake receives a great deal
of help from his neighbors in Two Rivers, the Lanigans and he
is very happy Walt will accompany him as his snow machiner. The
Serum Run excitement started early this fall as Blake and his
girlfriend, Erin Harms, began training a group of mostly young
dogs in preparation for the journey. On the Serum Run, Blake is
looking forward to the chance to travel to Nome with a great group
of new friends while helping spread Colonel Vaughan’s positive
life message in the process. For more information about Blake,
