My husband, Paul and I run Broken Runner
Sled Dog Kennel in Willow, Alaska. Our kennel consists of 42 Alaskan
Huskies ranging in age from 2 years to 16 years old. Two of our Alaskan
Huskies, Kayla and Mattie-Su live inside and our 43rd dog is -Ollie
- a mini wire-haired 13 year old doxie. Mattie-Su is a midget Alaskan
Husky and she thinks she is the boss of everyone! We have a cat too
- Singe!
I moved to Alaska in 1993 from Connersville, Indiana
to attend Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka. I graduated in 1995
with a B.S. in Fisheries Science.
In order to care for
our 43 dogs I presently work for Powercorp Alaska, LLC, a power
controls and wind turbine re-manufacturer company from Australia.
Ten years ago, I made the mistake of taking my mom mushing for a
Christmas present and have been hooked ever since.

This will be my fifth Serum Run. Each
year the run is totally different even though the trail is the same.
The group of people we travel with definitely defines the trip.
I have made this trip with the flu, broken runners, leaders who’ve
mutinied, I’ve been knocked off my sled by a tripod marker
while traveling through the Topkok Mountains and by the end of one
Serum Run I had caught a nasty bacteria. So, if I keep coming back
year after year this expedition must be worth it and it is!
My husband, Paul will be making the trip again this year too.
If you’d like to follow Paul and I and our 24 Alaskan Huskies,
you can e-mail us at mushing@gci.net
