Hannah Moderow
- 2007 Musher
Hannah Moderow was born and raised
in Alaska, in the company of her family and their team of sled
dogs. Whether competing in the one-dog class at age six, or the
Junior Iditarod throughout high school, sled dogs were among her
most important mentors and friends. Spring break
camping trips in the Nancy Lake area as well as epic journeys
to participate in the Wyoming Stage Stop Race were some of the
most memorable family mushing adventures. Older brother, Andy,
paved the way for the family’s long distance mushing future
with his 17th place finish in the 2001 Iditarod. The Moderow’s
have been mushing to Nome ever since.
Hannah took a four-year break from mushing to attend Cornell University,
where she majored in English and Art History. Without her sled
dogs in New York, Hannah adopted the sport of running, and participated
in many half marathons and one full marathon. Hannah spent each
March in the basement of the Cornell library, following the progress
of Mom (Debbie) and Dad (Mark), as they raced in the Iditarod.
She is now excited to make her own trip to Nome!
After graduating from Cornell in
2006, Hannah returned to Alaska where she lives in Denali Park.
Aside from tending to the forty-dog kennel, Hannah works as a
writer and prep cook. She is thrilled to be a participant in the
Serum Run, especially because her Dad and Mom will also be making
the trip. Mushing has always been a family affair, and this is
no exception. Hannah is thrilled to be reunited with her lead
dog of a lifetime, Juliet, and eight yearlings who will make their
mushing debut in the Serum Run 2007: Topher, Abbott, Lynah, Mugs,
Tiger, Lily, Pokey and Roo.
Mellen Shea, an amazing musher, counselor and friend is the important
inspiration for Hannah’s 2007 Serum Run. Mellen took Hannah
on her first overnight camping trip with dogs, and advised her
through the college application process to go to Cornell. Mellen
was the voice of encouragement to Hannah this past winter. In
an email that she wrote while battling cancer, she highlighted
her love for the Serum Run. The trail to Nome is a better one
because of Mellen, and it is thanks to her wisdom that Hannah
and her dog team prepare for Serum Run 2007.
