ABOUT
HOWARD LINCOLN...
Howard was born in White Mountain, Alaska August 22, 1931. He
was raised there and lives there now with four siblings still
residing in White Mountain as well. White Mountain is HOME and
he will never move away. He was drafted into the US Army and volunteered
to extend his time in order to serve in the Korean conflict. He
was a cross country skier, competing with his team in Sapporo,
Japan in 1953. He won second place.
Howard has been a fan and tireless volunteer for the Iditarod
race for 20 years. In 2001 he was honored by being the first recipient
of the Iditarod's Golden Clipboard award. The golden Clipboard
award is given to the person/checkpoint whose efforts have created
a welcoming, organized, supportive role for the racers. It is
a very special recognition, and much deserved by Howard. Howard
has also been supportive and a friend of the late Norman Vaughan.
Every year Norman would come through White Mountain on the Serum
Run. After Norman gave his talk in the gymnasium, he would always
go to visit Howard's mother, Lucy Lincoln. Howard has been wonderful
to us as "outsiders". He has taken us to see various
Eskimo traditions including fish camp and the first seal hunt
arriving back at the village. He is proud of his Eskimo heritage
and his village.
