KATIE TONGUE - MUSHER

My husband John Bramante and I moved to Alaska in 1993. We live in Kasilof with our three children, Juliet (9), Elena Macrae (7), and Katharine (2), and our 27 dogs.

John's a doc; I do a little of this and a little of that, but the Mama thing takes up most of my time. I keep the books at the office. We play and coach soccer when we can - I coached the local high-school girls for many years. ... Did I mention that we have 3 kids?

I have roots in Oklahoma and Maine, spent a few years in China and Taiwan, taught French and English for a time. It seems long ago, but I do remember smiling my way through most of it, which is a bit of a blessing.

We got involved with sleddogs when our friend Gus left his team in our yard while he headed out commercial fishing in '95. I've done a few mid-distance races but have mostly been the chief training run technician. I hung out with the kids while John and Gus did the racing. I really enjoy getting out with the dogs on the trails we have around the hills here at home. I'm looking forward to seeing another part of Alaska on the Serum Run. Having sent John and Gus and the dogs off on a few Iditarods, it'll be nice to be the one heading off on the back of the sled for a change.

Thanks to all the coordinators and volunteers and to Colonel Vaughn.
