Nancy Marty
- MUSHER
I was born in Madison
Wisconsin and grew up making snow angels and snow forts. I graduated
from college with a Masters degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology
and also "graduated" from any interest I once had in
snow. I moved to San Jose California and spent five years working
with children experiencing speech and language delays.
I began to miss the four seasons I grew up with and accepted a
position as a Speech Pathologist with the Matanuska-Susitna Borough
School District in Palmer Alaska in 1984.
I was lucky enough to be in Nome at the finish of the 1985 Iditarod
when Libby Riddles won. I was in awe of the dogs and drivers and
the relationship they had between them.
I met Jim Davis when we were both working at Iditarod Elementary
school in Wasilla Alaska. He had acquired eight dogs from a friend
and I would dog sit for him when he would go heli-skiing on the
weekends.
Jim and I were married in 1990 and currently have a kennel of
39 dogs. I have been a dog handler for many races and I enjoy
that high level of excitement both dogs and competitors exhibit.
Jim and I are so happy to have the opportunity to travel across
Alaska with 24 of our dogs and visit the villages along the way.
We are especially glad to help give information about this years
Serum Run Medical Mission; to wear snow machine helmets when traveling
on a snow machine. We have worked with students who have suffered
a traumatic brain injury from a snow machine/four wheeler accident
when they were not wearing a helmet.
We enjoy kayaking and long trips in Prince William Sound in the
summer and fly fishing Mat-Su rivers and streams.
