ROBERT BEAR - 2007 MUSHER

After Graduating from Purdue University in 1986, I received a one way ticket to Alaska from my father as a graduation present with a card saying "write if you get work!" I landed in Glacier Bay National park where I worked seasonal in the tourist industry for four years before moving to Cooper Landing, AK in the Spring of 1990. In 1997 I left the tourism Industry and ventured off on my own. I started my own construction company, Bear Biz LLC doing renovations and custom homes in the Cooper Landing Area where I live today.

During my years in the tourism industry I developed a fondness for travel and seeking out new adventures. I have been fortunate enough to travel across the United States, Parts of Canada and kayak the Sea of Cortez, Mexico. I took a 3 month backpack trip across Australia and New Zealand, a month trip to the Gran Sabana in Venezuela, a 2 month trek through Greece, Egypt and Israel and a one month venture to Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia. I also manage a short trip to England, Prague, Vienna, and a Caribbean Cruise. But never did I anticipate that I would travel across the interior of Alaska, in the dead of winter, by dog sled. I must be crazy or better yet, met someone a little crazier than me.

In January of 2005, through a long series of events, I met this woman (Jane Faulkner) who owned a few dogs (about 22 to be exact). On our first date she took me to a Musher's banquette for a race she had just participated in. On our next date as the temperatures were rising and the long Alaska Winter was giving way to spring, she took me on our second date - a two day trip to Lake Louise in search of snow and cold weather. Right then and there I should of realized something was a rye, but after I experienced my first dog sled run, I was hooked on the dogs and her.

So here I am, starting another adventure. I look forward to the all riches it brings.

And Dad - Even though I won't be working - I'll try to drop you line nevertheless!
