SCOTT CHESNEY
I got hooked on mushing 25 years
ago when I ran my first race in Chama, New Mexico. That’s
right, New Mexico: hotbed of dog driving in the great American
Southwest. I trained my three Siberian Huskies by hooking them
up with a friend’s eighteen dog team. We certainly drew
some attention, running 21 dogs around the irrigation ditch banks
outside of Albuquerque pulling a cut-down Corvair!
I eventually came to my senses and moved to Fairbanks with my
wife, Maureen, and sixteen dogs in 1993 in order to have more
time on the runners than sprint racing in the Southwest could
offer. Since then, we’ve grown to 37 dogs, and have done
a few middle distance races and expeditions.
Traveling with dogs is just about the best way to see this amazing
country because you travel as a part of the land, not separated
from it and the experiences it offers. This
will be my second adventure with the Serum Run. I didn’t
get nearly enough photos on last years trip, or time with the
Serum Runners, or conversations with the people along the way.
I’m hoping tht can be remedied this time around. If not…
