I
am a 11 year veteran public school teacher and a “rookie”
dog musher
My chance to participate in this year’s Serum Run came by
unusual circumstances. In September of this year, my 4th/5th grade
teaching position was cut to half-time two weeks into the school
year because of budget cuts This disappointing turn of events opened
a door for me. It gave me the chance to become a full-time musher
at Arctic Dreams Kennel (as opposed to the part-time handler and
puppy trainer I have been in the past), a sled dog kennel my husband
and I run in partnership. I have spent the last five months teaching
five six hours a day and the rest of my days training our sled dogs
while my husband was working construction on the North Slope. I
spent so much time with the dogs, I wanted the chance to “get
on the trail.” I applied to the Serum Run in November, and
was accepted! My husband, Jason Halseth
will support me on a snow machine.
My own personal goal is to complete this epic endeavor, involve
my fourth and fifth grade class in my adventure with the aid of
internet technology, and provide inspiration to all students to
follow their dreams by inviting other classrooms to also follow
the journey on the internet. To accomplish this, I hope to be be
posting photographs and journal entries on the Serum Run Website
as the journey progresses. This is a dream come true for me to be
able to particpate in such an epic endeavor because I am sure next
year I will be back in a classroom full-time!
