Walt Lanigan Snowmachine Support

Walt Lanigan was born in 1947 in Kingston, New York. While in high school, he spent his afternoons riding as a rodeo cowboy. After attending college for two years at New Paltz, New York, he started to ride professionally and was ultimately ranked 17th in the world as a bull rider for the International Rodeo Association in 1964. In 1966, Walt enlisted in the Army and served two tours of duty in Vietnam as a combat engineer. Upon his return from Vietnam, Walt continued riding professionally on the rodeo circuit. In 1969 after attending Woodstock, Walt went on to ride the bulls at Madison Square Garden. Eventually, Walt moved west to Colorado and began work as a logger, buckaroo and heavy equipment operator. Later, Walt moved to Idaho and purchased a ranch of his own.
In 1991, Walt Moved north to Alaska. He met the former Deborah Worrell and the two were married in 1997. The Lanigan’s have six children and seven grandchildren. Walt is currently employed as a Superintendent for Harrison Western at the Pogo Gold Mine in Delta Junction. In addition to his full time employment, the Lanigans operate Lanigan’s Retreat on Lake Chandalar in the Brooks Range. The lodge serves international clients and offers snowmachine trips, outdoor photography, fishing and wilderness adventures. Walt makes countless snowmachine trips between Coldfoot and Chandalar each winter carrying supplies for the lodge. He believes this experience will serve him well during the Serum Run. Walt is excited about making his first trip to the Bering Sea Coast by snowmachine and he’s also looking forward to helping his neighbor, Blake, reach Nome with his dogs.
