| 2011 Serum Run Team Selection:
The decision was not easy and made for many sleepless nights. Typically
we would only take 12-13 mushers, but we had so many highly experienced
applicants we extended the number which can make things a little tricky
in some areas with parking and sleeping. The choice was based on many
factors such as experience, reason for wanting to go, and partner along
with ability for attending events. Please note that there are still several “hoops” that need to be jumped through in order to guarantee your departure from Nenana such as meeting attendance, event attendance, food drops, paying of fee, and retaining snowmachine partner (mushers better be nice to them for the next 9 months!) to name a few. Those on the alternate list the decision wasn’t easy and we encourage you to still participate with the group on all things and maintain your training schedule because you just don’t know when you may have an opportunity to be moved into a permanent slot. You will know your status BEFORE January 1, 2011. However, if you would like to consider going as a snowmachiner please let us know as it would be great to have mushers that are machine able on the trail too to help with many of the daily aspects of the trip. I know it’s not mushing, but you still get to see the trail and even interact more in the villages and see more than a musher would. It’s a great learning experience too! If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Also, right after this email I am going to send the same email using my more common email address: erin@winddieselpower.com If you don’t receive it, please let me know. Sometimes that address ends up in people’s spam folder, so check there and then OK the address. Here in the next few weeks we would like to try and have a teleconference with the group (I know it’s hard for some because of working on the glacier, etc but let us know ASAP what day of week and time works best for you). 2011 Serum Run Participants - click here |

| The
Norman Vaughan Serum Run is now a Biennial Event running in the odd
years, with the next event taking place in Feb. 2011. However, in the
even years starting in Feb. 2010 we plan to hold a Serum Run Boot Camp
for those interested in the Nenana to Nome Serum Run in 2011. We are
looking at holding the Serum Run Boot Camp on February 12 – 15
(tentative dates), 2010 where interested mushers and snowmachiners can
get a better idea of what the Serum ’25 Run is all about. The trip is
limited to 15 mushers and 25 snowmachiners. Serum Run veterans are
encouraged to apply, but future, first-time Serum Runners will be given
priority.

Serum Run '25 is a dog team journey with snow machine support across 768 miles of Alaska's frozen rivers, tundra and sea ice from Nenana to Nome. The mission of this annual trip is twofold. First, it is to commemorate the twenty men and their dog teams who relayed crucial diphtheria serum to Nome, saving countless lives. Second, and more importantly, it is to widen the awareness throughout Alaska of the need for inoculations for every single child and to stress important health issues such as immunizations, medical exams & cancer screening, tobacco cessation, accident prevention, HIV awareness and drug and alcohol abstinence. Mushers and their
snow machining partners along with over 150 sled dogs will
retrace the route of the original Serum Run. Stopping at each
village and school along the way, they will rekindle the spirit
of the Serum Run by bringing a message to school children
and their parents regarding the need for inoculations, awareness
and making healthy lifestyle choices.
It is important
to remember this story and keep it alive through our annual
1925 Serum Run to Nome. It is important to honor the men and
dogs that virtually saved the life of Nome. It is even more
important to honor our children by educating them about their
health.
Learn about Immunization.
